Introduction

The 21st century world is a galaxy of advancement and innovation where even the space can be encapsulated in seconds, where a work which takes 3 days to be completed can be completed in 3 seconds and where the destruction of planet can be done and prevented too by just a press of button. We have multifaceted advancement which has made the world a global village and made the global life very simple. But these lifestyle has not only influenced our living or related issues, but have also been much effective in influencing the mentality and inner being of a person and there are bi-faceted. On the positive way,we have become more logical, innovative and possess a more reasonable and scientific mind with which even a 3 year old boy can judge his action and on the contrary many global problem like terrorism, poverty, population increase,Explosions had spread out like wild fire. One such Problem is Ragging which is mainly concerned with student circle.

What Is Ragging?

F
irstly we should know what is ragging?
Ragging is a form of abuse on newcomers to educational institutions in India and Sri Lanka. It is similar to the American phenomenon known as hazing. Ragging is a practice which is growing in colleges & institutes of higher studies where a student or a person is brutally tortured either mentally or physically by their seniors. No doubt it is an inhuman practice more dreadful than “SATI DAH”. But alarmingly the practice & its consequences are growing up day by day, where the sufferer is not only physically beaten but above all, beaten to the soul and mind which is more dreadful than death.

What are its causes ?

One major reason behind the spreading out of this menace is the lack of moral values, especially among the youngsters. This lacking remains a black mark on a person's soul and mentality. They do not know how to act with other fellows like them. In places of higher education, especially where ragging is most prevalent, the senior student try to impose and show off their superiority over the junior ones..Inhuman acts and tortures are being inflicted on the poor sufferers of the menace. They are even made to play with their life. The act is more humiliating among boys than among girls. But ragging marks no discrimination with gender or caste. It is a matter of fun for the imposer to see the victim standing naked in front of the mob or to see him jumping from the 2nd or even 4th floor ,to see him eating black shoe polish in front of a mob. The victim thus prefers to close his eyes than to fall prey to these devilish hunters. Since it is fun for all the seniors so it cannot have any particular cause,it is simply an entertainment for the seniors.

Millions of student every year try to get selected in the best institutes but they don't know that it's a hell awaiting them. As soon as admission to technical and non-technical institutes starts, news of suicides starts pouring in from all parts of the country. To our amazement,it has become a nightmare so devilish that youth find more peace in death and they commit “SUICIDE”. But that is no matter at all,for who they are incorrigible can never be cured as “a snake which never forgets to bite even though fed with the costliest milk”.Ragging & their consequence have become the foremost headlines of newspapers these days.Every other day we come across news about suicide, missing and depression from every reputed institutes like IIT's,Medical Colleges,Engineering Colleges etc etc.

Even though we have a great deal about the fact ,still the menace grows. We criticise the authorities and government for having failed in taking appropriate action against such happening, without noticing that the four fingers pointing ourselves. To the utmost shameful act, frankly speaking many students are sexually tormented too and we the mere starers just click our tongue for a while and then forget about everything. And boldly speaking this is a new mentality where a mob gathers just to see a man being beaten up with out a reason. No one just even steps a toe to save such a life. When this is the mentality,do we deserve to be called responsible students?

What constitutes ragging?

Theoretically speaking, Ragging is defined as –“ the doing of any act which causes, or is likely to cause any physical, psychological or physiological harm of apprehension or shame or embarrassment to a student”, and includes–
(a) “Teasing or abusing by playing Practical joke on, or causing hurt to any student. “
b)” Asking any student to do any act which such student will not in the ordinary
course do and which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame,
or torment or embarrassment so as to adversely affect the physique or psyche
of such fresher or any other student.”

c) “Any act by a senior student that prevents, disrupts or disturbs the regular
academic activity of any other student or a fresher.”

d) “Exploiting the services of a fresher or any other student for completing the
academic tasks assigned to an individual or a group of students.”
e) “Any act of financial extortion or forceful expenditure burden put on a fresher or
any other student by students.”

f) “Any act of physical abuse including all variants of it: sexual abuse, homosexual
assaults, stripping, forcing obscene and lewd acts, gestures, causing bodily
harm or any other danger to health or person. “

g) “Any act or abuse by spoken words, emails, posts, public insults which would
also include deriving perverted pleasure, vicarious or sadistic thrill from
actively or passively participating in the discomfiture to fresher or any other
student. “

h)” Any act that affects the mental health and self-confidence of a fresher or any
other student with or without an intent to derive a sadistic pleasure or showing
off power, authority or superiority by a student over any fresher or any other
student. “

21)On the night of September 13th/14th, 1984, TK Chidambaram Raju Iyer, 22 years old, was killed by his seniors at the Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. He was ragged by 4 senior students (Ashok Kapadia, Ajay Batra, Sujit Gopal, and Rajnish Jain), who remain scot-free to this day. Also, no action was taken against the Director of IMT, Ghaziabad or the warden of the hostel. Unless strict criminal proceedings are carried out against such people, the menace of ragging will continue to haunt India.
It proves that Ragging is not a new phenomenon in India,it has a dark history that dates back long ago. This article only proves that how so many people became the daily meal of this devil. And yet the government remained silent for so many years. Is it necessary that a tragic event has to occur to wake up the government?
*The actual data can vary.It  be far more dreadful and long(in terms of list of names) than the data provided.

Steps Taken By Governament

After the Death of Aman Kachru in Himachal Pradesh in a Medical College ,the Government started taking “its so called” Action. The government Introduced the Raghavan's commission .Based on the Raghavan Committee recommendations, the Supreme Court directed the University Grants Commission to fund a toll-free helpline for students in distress. The helpline (1800-180-5522) was launched by Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal. Another number, 155222, will be functional within three months. Students, parents and guardians can file complaints also via the Internet on helpline@antiragging.net.
How the Toll free no. Work?
The call centre is located in Delhi and the professionals manning it will respond to calls in English, Hindi and a selected regional language with a call recording system. When the complaint is registered, the caller will be given a unique number.
Within 15 minutes, the complaint will automatically be sent to the authorities concerned. But the identity of the caller will be protected. The unique number can be used as a reference for all future communication and feedback.
To ensure accountability
Once the grievance has been received by the institution, an officer concerned will look into the merit of the complaint and forward it for action. The matter will be tracked until necessary action is taken.
Reminder
If the complaint is not acted upon within a specified time, senior officers will get a reminder either by email or on the phone. The reminders will go up to the institutional as well as executive level, if required, to ensure accountability.
After necessary action is taken, the student will get a call or email confirmation containing details of his or her complaint and action taken.

Steps to be taken against Ragging

Our Solution

As we all know that "if the roots of a tree r good and if they are in great contact with the soil then it can withstand even the toughest calamities like flood". So for a student's overall betterment it's necessary that his base should be good.

Steps to be taken by the parents from the birth onward

It is well said that we can give whatever shape we want to a wet soil. Similarly a person's childhood is the most important part of his life when he starts learning life, when he starts discovering the world from his point of view. At this time it is the sole responsibility of the parents to show them the right path and give them the perfect shape. Following are the few steps which a parent must follow from the very beginning of the life of their ward.

  • The parent must try to inculcate good habits into their ward.
  • they must tell them Doha’s of Kabir,Rahim,Rashkhan in an easy way and must try inculcate those saying literally.
  • they must tell them the stories of Indian saints and their saying which will increase their knowledge about Indian history as well as grow positive thinking.
  • As the child grows ,the parents must keep an eye on the kind of Children with whom their ward is playing and doing friendship.
  • If their ward is playing with bad children(who have bad habits or can be bad for other children) then they must tell their ward to stop playing with them .
  • Parents must try to inculcate good feelings like “Love for other”,”Kindness”,”Mercy” into their ward.
  • It is really very hard to take out time for their wards for working parents but they must know that their child and his/her future is their top priority.
  • Even if it is too difficult then also it is recommended that parents must sit with their ward at least for once in an entire day and discuss their problems.

All these steps will have an adverse effect on the child and his/her future as this will grow positive thinking in them.

Steps to be taken by the Schools
A school life is very very important and essential for a child and his future. So it is also the responsibility of the school and the teachers to grow good behavior, thinking and mentality into the students.

  • A teacher must be extra careful if she is teaching primary classes as its the time when a child's mentality grows the most.
  • When the child reaches his teenager life ,the teacher should have a friendly relation with the students.
  • Power point presentations on Life skills should be shown by the teachers at least twice a weak as it will grow positive thinking and moral values like truth, peace, love etc.
  • Children Films like “Taare Zamin Par” and “Salaam Bachche “ should be shown time to time.
  • When the child is fully grown that is he is in class 11 or 12,at that time he must be given extra classes on moral value and positive thinking.
  • School must arrange extra classes for student of 11-12 to be taken by various organizations like Brahma Kumari,Sahaj Yoga etc.
  • The school must try to enroll students in various courses like “Art of Living” founded by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar etc.
  • The school must also arrange extra classes to be taken by Anti Ragging Squad.

As Colleges and Universities are places of higher educations so it is difficult for them to arrange classes on moral value. The Institutes can only take precautions such that Ragging does not occur.
These are the few steps which should be taken by the institutes and the students to eradicate this menace.
Steps to be taken by Institutes
  • Rules are already made by the government now it is the duty of the colleges and institutes to supervise these rules. The colleges/Universities must set up a supervising committee to look after the implementation of Raghavan's committee.
  • It will be the duty of the supervising committee to inspect the classes and hostels time to time and strict action to be taken if someone caught red handed.
  • The college/University campus should be fitted with hidden video cameras so that strict supervision can be kept in the corridors and classes.
  • The college must seek the assistance of professional counselors at the time of admissions to counsel ‘freshers’ in order to prepare them for the life ahead, particularly for adjusting to the life in hostels. At the commencement of the academic session the Head of the technical Institution, University shall convene and address a meeting of various functionaries/agencies, like Wardens, representatives of students, parents/guardians, faculty, district administration including police, to discuss the measures to be taken to prevent ragging and steps to be taken to identify the offenders and punish them suitably.
  • The Anti ragging help line phone numbers must be printed out and given to each and every student as well as pasted on the walls.
  • Each batch of freshers should be divided into small groups and each such group shall be assigned to a member of staff. Such staff member should interact individually with each member of the group on daily basis to discuss the problems/difficulties, if any faced by the freshers in the Institution and extend necessary help.
  • The 1st year and 2nd year hostels must be separated completely and no seniors shall be allowed to enter the hostel without permission.
  • The principal must select a student representative who will represent the 1st year student in front of the principal and will discuss the problems.
  • If someone is found ragging then he/she shall be immediately rusticated .
Steps to be taken by Parents
  • The parents must seek the help of a counselor before admitting their wards to tell them how to cope up with Hostel Life
  • Parents should visit their wards from time to time.
  • If their ward is suffering from suicidal tendency or depression then he'she should be immediately taken under custody of a Phsycatrist or Counselor.
  • The parent must visit the supervising committee and discuss with them if their ward is facing some difficulty.

Steps to be taken by Student themselves
  • It is the soul responsibility of the student themselves to raise their voice against ragging. Ragging is something which is not at all tolerable.
  • If someone has been ragged then he or she must immediately contact the anti ragging squad and the higher authorities of the institutes.
  • They must know that Suicide is not the ultimate way and must face the problem with courage

Our Inspiration

We Really wanted to do something against Ragging and what's the best way to express our views except the think quest International competition which provided us ample opportunities to create something good and to do something good for the country. Ragging was one of those problems which is so far not very much highlighted by the country and it is not that much open to international world. Our entire group was shocked when we researched about the topic in the internet and we found so many people died because of this evil and its history which dates back more than a decade and this was the time when our heart was filled with anger against those raggers and sorrow for those who died and it was the time when we decided to take this movement to a new level by enrolling our team to the think quest international contest.

Our Action Plan

Our first major task was to select a coach and get ourselves enrolled. Not many teachers of our school are aware of this competition so we took this upon us to tell every teacher about this to get more and more students to help us. At this time of dilemma, Mrs. S Guha madam came to our rescue, when we told her about our idea, she was extremely excited,She not only got us enrolled but also gave us lots of information about this competition and our topic. She gave us lots of information about how to organize a group and to complete the project step by step. We chose the digital media event as our competition ground. As we were scrolling down the pages we came across the various software’s that we can use to do this project. Our group then decided to write blog as it is simple, cheap and effective. Our aim was to make a project which is simple, written in easy language as well as be very effective. We at first decided to prepare a document before uploading every thing in the blog. We wrote everything on a paper which we needed to make a good project and that includes:
  • Essay(definition,causes,constitutes,solution)
  • Interviews
  • Surveys
  • Posters

Since ragging is a phenomenon of brutal torture on first year student by the second year without any reason so the pictures included can be visually very offensive and sexually explicit  so we dropped that idea rather we decided to use Posters. Then we downloaded the Team Roster Worksheet and wrote everything that was needed. After assigning the work by our leader in the group,we started working on our project. Road map to success tutorial survey was the first thing we completed as it gained us extra points.

When the document was completed we got it corrected by our school English Teacher S. Pal madam. She was very helpful and enthusiastic from the beginning. She corrected it carefully so that there are no grammatical or spelling mistake in the document. After the document was corrected we carefully edited the mistakes and made the real project. After doing that we arranged our documents in a sequence When the document was completed we got it reviewed by many teachers. We collected their feed backs ,omitted our project again and at last when everything was okay ,we pasted all into our blog and then we submitted the project.

Our Research

The essay is completely self written,it is not just copied and pasted ,but some of the technical terms are taken from various websites as they cannot be self written. Our next step was interview. So we decided to take three interviews. Since Ragging is most dominant in Engineering and Medical colleges so we decided to take interviews from the professors of Engineering and Medical college. It was a very hectic and hard job in front of us. But finally we managed to get the interview from the professor. Unfortunately we were able to take only one interview,we could not arrange for a interview from professors of engineering colleges. Along with this interview .We also took interview of our school Principal Sir to get his opinion on ragging. After completing the interviews it was our responsibility to get the opinions of people around the globe. For that we started an online survey in the surveymonkey.com..We tried our best to spread this survey through out the globe and attract peoples to take this survey. This was the most challenging job in front of us. We started educating and telling people about this survey through many social networking sites. And at last we were successful to pull over people around the globe and take this survey. When the survey was done,we selected the best 5 answers which we decided to post on our site.
In order to take our movement one step ahead we also wrote a skit which we performed at the school stage at the skit competition which got overwhelming response from the audience and giving us the first position in the competition.
Our next step was to draw posters,so we collected lots of innovative ideas after a lengthy discussion with the teammates and coach. We then drew a rough sketch of the poster and banners before making the final one. And then we drew the final sketch and got it corrected by our coach.
After all this the skeleton of our blog was ready and we just needed to arrange it accordingly and paste it on the web.
Q. What will be its effect?
Ans:- our project will create an adverse effect on the student who are preparing for their
medical/engineering entrance examination as well as on the parents, school going
students, school principals, teachers, concerned authorities(who are given the task to stop this
menace) and most importantly common people. It will educate them more about this devilish
phenomenon and will also provide them the instructions they should follow if ragged or what
precautions they should take.

Q. What Knowledge we gained?
Ans:- We had lots of fun while creating the project. Our work began with the collection of materials
from the internet. While doing so we came to know more about this phenomenon. When we saw
the list of students died due to this menace our heart was filled with sorrow for those intelligent
minds. While writing the solution we have to think from the point of view of a principal,a parent
and a student .It provided us with more mature thinking and will help us a lot in our long run in
the future.
